Dr. Ben Tomic is our 2025 Quality Professional of the Year. With nineteen competencies on his CV and 50 skills on LinkedIn, he is a valuable asset as a certified quality engineer (CQE) or AS9100 lead auditor. He also highlights the importance of emotional intelligence in his work.

Now that my hair has turned gray, I periodically think back and consider “what if …” What if I had chosen a different major in college? What if I had not taken a specific job opportunity?

For several years we have been reading about the ominous skills gap. In some trades, we are teetering on the edge of the gap; in others, we have already picked up several bumps and bruises on the trip down to the bottom of the canyon.

Many of our greatest quality giants have discussed the value of education and training. For example, Dr. Deming dedicated two of his renowned 14 points of management to the subject.

What do these words really mean?
